Zoological Gardens in Copenhagen.
The Zoological Gardens in Copenhagen has made efforts to reduce energy use for many years. Solar energy has been used for many years in such areas as the Tropical House. In 2002, Copenhagen’s Zoological Gardens became the first zoo in the world to become environmentally classified. In 2004, the city of Copenhagen decided to set aside funds to promote the spread of solar energy installations. The Zoo decided to apply for grants to install two faciliti-es; one as a flagship for the façade of the entrance, the other as part of the teaching in the School Service. They chose Gaia Solar because our expertise made it possible to produce custom-made panels that were tailored and a-dapted to the building’s architecture. Our unique hidden mounting system, “Colibri”, makes the solar panels appear to float in front of the building. This gives the installation a light and beautiful appearance. The facade system is execu-ted with dark mono-crystalline solar cells in a floating system, where the mounting profiles are not visible. The solar panels are designed so that the panel box follows the pattern of the Zoo’s existing facade. A display on the facade shows the plant’s eye view of the installation as well as the accumulated effect. The solar panels on the School services are executed with effective and inexpensive poly-crystalline solar panels. The panels are mounted in mounting consoles with ballast. The Zoo’s impressive visitor numbers of over 1 million people will see these faciliti-es annually and it serves as an aesthetic and environmental statement.
